Software Defined Radio and the Software Communications Architecture from a European perspective

Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology is prevalent in many of today's radiocommunications systems. For military applications the SDR approach enables a number of specific benefits, of which one is the separation of the waveforms from the radio platform. This new paradigm in radio architecture is the essential prerequisite for waveform portability between differing platform architectures. To allow for waveform portability in a standardised way, the US authored the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) specifications. Numerous nations adopted them for the upgrade of their military radiocommunications systems. At an international level the Wireless Innovation Forum is the body supporting the harmonisation and advancement of the SCA. In this workshop, the advancements in SDR technology and the SCA standards will be described and the drivers for these advancements illustrated using the SDR activities in Europe as an example. The workshop will also encompass a short introduction into the SCA specifications and look into selected issues of waveform development and porting.

Dr. Boyd Buchin joined the German Armed Forces in 1991, graduated from officer school in 1992, and received a diploma degree in informatics in 1996 and a doctoral degree in the field of computational linguistics in 1999. From 1999 to 2002, he was a company commander, and from 2002 to 2003, he worked as a specialist for IT strategy at the IT office of the German Armed Forces. In 2003, he joined the company Rohde & Schwarz as a software developer. From 2005 to 2006, he was project leader of the preparatory study for the German SDR program and from 2006 to 2010 was head of R&D for platforms and waveforms. From 2010 to 2014, he was head of technical sales for army communication systems in Germany. Currently he is working in the studies department as a principal for studies.
