World's First TV White Space WiFi Prototype Based on IEEE 802.11af Draft Standard Developed 10.17.12 The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan, has developed the world's first WiFi prototype in the TV White Space (TVWS) (470 MHz - 710 MHz) based on the IEEE 802.11af draft specification. IEEE 802.11af is currently the only task group (TG) under the IEEE 802.11 working group (WG) for WiFi technologies in the TVWS. The developed system is the first prototype that verifies the physical (PHY) and media access control (MAC) layer design of the draft specification, following the worldwide trend of prompting the TVWS for wireless communication systems.

Security experts scoff at Mars rover hack threat 8.22.12 The word has been out for more than a week now that the hacktivist group Anonymous is looking to break into the communication system between NASA and the Mars rover, Curiosity. The New York security firm Flashpoint Partners reported that it found a message on an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) by a user called "MarsCuriosity," asking for help to hack into the signals NASA uses to communicate with the rover.

U.S. Army Orders 13,000 More JTRS HMS Rifleman Radios from General Dynamics 8/14/12 General Dynamics C4 Systems has received a new order from the U.S. Army for an additional 13,000 Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Handheld, Manpack, Small Form Fit (HMS) AN/PRC-154 Rifleman radios and accessory kits. This is the second order placed by the Army for PRC-154 Rifleman radios, bringing the number of radios ordered by the government to more than 19,000. OSSIE-GNU Radio Generic Component version 3.0 released 6/23/11 The OSSIE-GNU Radio Generic Component allows encapsulation and run time configuration of GNU Radio flowgraphs within OSSIE waveforms. The GC was initially developed by Duyun Chen, Garrett Vanhoy, and MaryPat Beaufait as part of an NSF funded research experience for undergraduates in Cognitive Communications during the summer of 2010.
